Canada is heaven (3) -- testimony from some of those who were there
My wife is a refugee from World War II. Specifically she and her grandmother fled the second Soviet invasion of Latvia lived briefly in British camps in Germany, some years in England, and finally in Canada. And she was one of the lucky ones!
Canada has been good to her, but she has been good to Canada. When somebody implies that refugees or immigrants are a burden, I think of her.
I was poking around YouTube today and ran across a long post on German women's experience of being POWs in Kitchener, Ontario, which is an area of German settlement and culture since the mid-19th century. The story is called Are we in the wrong country and emphasizes the disbelief the German women felt when people in Kitchener spoke perfect German.
But that is the least of it. There is much more to it. Have a look.
