Der Spiegel on Afghanistan

Here's a German view of the situation in Afghanistan. It's not very cheery.

  1. I believe that every Canadian Member of Parliament, who will be called upon to evaluate our role and policy in Afghanistan, should be exposed to this Spiegel article, and study it carefully. I can mail copies to all 300-odd MPs, but they will not be read except by some bored staffer, if at all. I would hope that Canadian readers of this blog would pester their local MP to read it.

The only weqkness in the article was the obligatory journalistic formula about how we shouldn't be "forcing democracy on those who aren't ready for it", etc... The very facts in the article contradict this point of view. The problem is not that the Afghan people don't understand democracy. The problem is that Americans and their Nato allies don't understand democracy, and are in fact eager to subvert it.
