Al Biryani -- food from Iraq

Here's a cheerier than usual post from one of McClatchy's Iraqi staffers.

We eat biryani at home in Canada's Near North. Must be that Indian cultural imperialism (joke).

According to the original writer, they've got Al'Biryani in Iraq now, just like we've got it in Canada.
I don't think anyone doubts it originated in India and Pakistan.

I thought it was interesting that the Iraqi writer was so fond of this dish.

If you check wikipedia, you'll see that biryani is a Persian word and the dish originated there as well.

I lived in Sulaymaniyah, Iraq for over two years and I can correct anonymous that the Kurdish people of Iraq consider it an ethnic Kurdish dish.

I too lived in Iraqi Kurdistan, and Biryani is a favorite. When asked most said it originated from an Iranian dish. It's delicious.
