This is the textbook I am using for the second half of my course on the History of Islamic Civilization. Today I read a long passage in preparation for tomorrow's lecture, when a student will comment on it. As always, my reaction to this direct, clearly-written and sensible book is:"Boy, this is good."

Thanks for the tip.I'm going to get it from the library. Does it primarily focus on the Levant and Middle East or is North Africa (besides Egypt) included as well?
It covers Algeria at some length, not the rest.
