Frederik Pohl on Jack Vance

One classic SF writer (and editor) reminisces about another: one of my favorite writers, Jack Vance.

  1. Interesting prose smith. Gosh knows one loves "Cugel the Clever" , the official "However of the Court" and his other characters.
Reading the body of Vance's work is like visiting the home of a noted artist friend of mine. All over the house are a bits and pieces of his art work. Some is stunning in its beauty, much of it is not. He feels much the same about all of it, so the problem is clearly not him or his work, but lies in how I view it. Jack Vance's work is like that. Most of it is not to somebody's taste. This has kept him from getting the popularity he deserves.
