Will McLean, "Outrance and Plaisance"
Will McLean has written an important article on "Outrance and Plaisance," two terms often misused to describe late medieval deeds of arms as "to the death" or "not." It appears in this year's volume of the Journal of Medieval Military History which is, alas, a bit pricey if you have to buy it yourself. Maybe Will will provide a short abstract at some point?

I will provide a short abstract on my blog when I can.
It seems that members of the Society of Medieval Military History get copies of the Journal as a benefit of membership, and membership is $35.
Their site says:
"The dues year runs from one Annual Meeting (which takes place at the International Congress of Medieval Studies in May) to the next. Active membership entitles you to receive a copy of the Journal when it is published, usually in the fall (so that, for example, if you pay your membership at the 2009 Annual Meeting, your membership will be valid until May 2010, and Volume 7 of the Journal will be shipped to you in late fall of 2009.) Active members will receive renewal requests about a month before the expiration of their membership."
It's not clear to me if you can still pay for 2010 and get Volume 8 or not, but you could ask.
